Short answer
Not every runny nose means sinusitis. However, facial pressure, prolonged nasal congestion, postnasal drip, reduced smell, or recurring episodes should be evaluated with an ENT medical examination.
Which signs should be noticed?
- Pressure or fullness around the forehead, face, or eyes
- Thick nasal discharge or clear postnasal drip with congestion
- Reduced sense of smell
- Symptoms that recur often or last longer than a usual cold
- Headache, tiredness, or poorer sleep quality together with nasal symptoms
What is assessed during an ENT examination?
During an ENT medical examination, the inside of the nose, the appearance of the discharge, sinus drainage pathways, allergy possibility, and anatomical narrowing are considered together. If needed, imaging or endoscopic evaluation may be requested by the physician.
What is a safe approach at home?
- Note when symptoms started and how often they recur
- Do not use antibiotics or nasal sprays for a long period without medical
advice
- Adequate fluids and balanced room air may support general comfort
- Share possible allergy triggers or seasonal worsening during the examination
When should it not be delayed?
Rapid medical evaluation is needed if severe facial pain, swelling around the eyes, high fever, confusion, or worsening complaints occur. Long-lasting or recurring symptoms should also not be left without examination.
